Macy’s Story

Macy Rose Stevens was diagnosed with complex heart defects at her twenty-week ultrasound. Macy’s congenital heart defects included tricuspid atresia, transposition of the great arteries and pulmonary stenosis. She had open-heart surgeries at one-month, six months and two-years old before eventually having a heart transplant on December 2, 2008.

At the age of 10, ten months after her transplant, Macy made her first of many club volleyball teams. Macy loved music, movies and volleyball. She adored the beach and hot summer days along with riding the waves in the Gulf. She loved to travel, experience exotic places and even got a chance to swim with dolphins on one of her many excursions.

In June of 2019 we departed for a Mediterranean cruise with Macy’s sisters, Sophia and Mia, her mom and dad, grandma Ann and nine aunts, uncles and cousins. Toward the end of our trip Macy did not feel well and visited the hospital immediately upon our return to the States. She was admitted to the hospital and we were told that Macy’s heart was failing. On July 5th, Macy was sedated and put on a ventilator to try and allow her heart to rest and fight to get stronger.

She fought to live her life to the fullest every day up until she passed away on the morning of July 12, 2019, seventeen days before her 21st birthday. She was surrounded by a roomful of family and friends.

Macy had a passion for animals, especially dogs.

Macy found a job at a local dog grooming shop and had aspirations of opening a chain of grooming shops that would be part dog grooming, pet boutique and coffee café. She had two golden doodles, Fozzy and Lulu, who she would often sneak out of the house to have to herself. We have founded the Macy’s Way foundation to help others through support including certified therapy animals and other means that share the same passion for helping animals that Macy had.
